Description

1994 player cards for Payoff Pitch Baseball.  This set includes L/R splits on the player cards.

The 1994 baseball season is most remembered for the players strike that saw the cancellation of the nearly 50 games for every team as well as the playoffs and World Series. There were several team and individual player performances of note. The Montreal Expos (74-40) and New York Yankees (70-43) led the National League and American League in wins and had a chance to finish with 100 wins or more if the season had continued. San Diegos Tony Gwynn was batting .394 when the strike was called. It was the highest average in a season since Ted Williams hit .406 in 1941. San Franciscos Matt Williams was also chasing a record as he had 43 HR and was on pace to match Roger Maris single season record. In the America League, Seattles Ken Griffey Jr. had 40 HR. On the mound, Yankees starter Jimmy Key led the majors with 17 wins. In the National League, Atlantas Greg Maddux won 16 games while posting a 1.56 ERA, more than a full run lower than Oaklands Steve Ontiveros AL leading 2.65 ERA. Several notable players ended their careers in 1994, including Hall of Fame pitcher Goose Gossage, 25 year veteran Charlie Hough, Jack Morris, Jeff Reardon, Lonnie Smith, Rick Sutcliffe and Bob Welch.
