Six-time MVP Kareem Abdul-Jabbar announced his retirement before the season began. His Los Angeles Lakers, lead by this season’s league MVP, Magic Johnson, advanced to the NBA Championship series by sweeping Portland, Seattle and Phoenix. In the Eastern Conference, the Detroit Pistons had a league best 63 wins and swept Boston and Milwaukee. The Chicago Bulls were able to win 2 games in the Conference Finals but ultimately fell 4 games to 2 sending Detroit to a showdown with the Lakers. Abdul-Jabbar’s and the Lakers’ fairy tale ending did not happen as the Pistons swept the Lakers in four games to win the series and NBA title.
