The 1979-1980 NBA season holds a significant place in basketball history due to the implementation of the three-point line this season. This innovation brought a new dimension to scoring strategies, allowing teams and players to showcase their long-range shooting skills.
The rivalry between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics intensified during this season. Led by the dynamic duo of Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the Lakers emerged as the top team in the Western Conference. Meanwhile, the Celtics were powered by Larry Bird, who made an immediate impact in his rookie season. Unfortunately, Bird was not able to lead the Celtics to the NBA Finals as the Julius Erving led Philadelphia 76ers dispatched Boston 4 games to 1 in the Eastern Conference Finals.
In a thrilling NBA Finals matchup, the Lakers and the Philadelphia 76ers faced off. The series is best remembered for its pivotal Game 6, which became known as the “Magic Johnson Game.” With Abdul-Jabbar injured, Magic Johnson, a rookie, played at the center position and delivered a memorable performance, scoring 42 points and securing 15 rebounds. The Lakers clinched the championship, and Magic Johnson’s star was firmly established.
