In 1976, as the United States commemorated its bicentennial, another national institution took center stage – baseball. Two future Hall of Fame players debuted in 1976, Andre Dawson and Bruce Sutter with several other very good players also making their debuts. Among them were Dale Murphy, Willie Wilson, Garry Templeton and Tony Armas highlighting the position players and for the pitchers, Dennis Martinez, Bob Knepper, Rick Sutcliffe, Joaquin Andujar, Scott McGregor and Mike Krukow. While his career was cut short due to a rotator cuff injury, AL Rookie of the Year Mark “The Bird” Fidrych also made his major league debut in 1976. Fidrych would win 19 games and post an MLB-Best 2.34 ERA while also completing 24 of his 29 starts. Unfortunately for “The Bird”, Detroit would go 54-78 in games not started by Fidrych.
The National League saw two 100-win teams with the Philadelphia Phillies finishing the season 101-61 and winning the NL East by nine games over the 92-70 Pittsburgh Pirates. In the NL West, Cincinnati finished 102-60 with a 10 game advantage over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The New York Yankees could have won 100 games if they had played out all 162 games but only played 159 games finishing 97-62; 9 games above the Baltimore Orioles. The AL West had the tightest pennant race in 1976 with the Kansas City Royals winning 90 games and finishing 3 wins ahead of the Oakland Athletics and 5 wins above the Minnesota Twins. The AL Championship Series saw the Yankees and Royals going the full five games with Chris Chambliss hitting a HR to lead off the bottom of the 9th inning in game 5 to send New York to the World Series. In the NLCS, the Cincinnati Reds outscored the Philadelphia Phillies 19-11 in a three-game sweep. The Reds continued their undefeated postseason by sweeping the Yankees four games to none in the World Series.
